Dialyzer Handling After Reprocessing

Disconnect the dialyzer from the automated reprocessing system.

1. High residual amounts of blood products (organic load) indicated by a low priming volume may reduce Peracidin below an effective level. Aggressive cleaning; by allowing Peracidin solution to dwell in the dialyzer and repeating the cleaning and testing cycles, may improve volumes in some dialyzers. Consistently poor results indicate an equipment malfunction or may indicate the need for patient heparin modeling.

2. Place disinfected blood port caps and dialysate port caps on the dialyzer. Note: Dialyzers reprocessed with Peracidin solution may undergo an internal pressure buildup during storage. A ventable dialyzer dialysate port cap should be used which allows the operator to vent the pressure buildup in dialyzers. Use caution at all times to avoid being sprayed with Peracidin solution.

3. Store the capped, reprocessed dialyzer with both dialysate port caps resting against a shelf or other hard surface, to prevent caps from being forced off the dialyzer due to pressure buildup. If storing in this manner is not possible, place the dialyzer in a polyethylene plastic bag (or similar container) to prevent inadvertent spraying of personnel or equipment. Venting the pressure using the ventable port cap 10 to 15 minutes after reprocessing may prevent caps from being forced off.

Note: Inadvertent disconnection of ventable dialysate port caps due to high internal pressure indicates either the storage conditions are improper or the dialyzer has not been fully cleaned.
